Alright guys, here is the new nintendo dsi released by our good buddies in japan. Available november 1st in japan with no absolute date yet for north america. Alot of things have changed in the ds with nintendo keeping to their lines of being a family friendly company and all that crap. So here's the rundown of what is to be expected in the new nintendo ds.
 
 
So after 4 years and some intensive research, Nintendo has come out with some surprising specs to back up why they must continue making very "innovative" handheld devices for little asian kids in japan to buy and waste their life away using. The GBA slot has now officially been nuked and you will notice that the new ds has moved the location of its indication lights [because the world isnt left handed like me x.x] the power button is now located on the inside on the opposite side from the START and SELECT buttons. Speakers have also been improved though nintendo ironically admit they are not perfect but at least they're better than the previous gen lol. phail.
  
Still living up to its DS name, the new Nintendo DSi will have dual cameras to accompany its dual screen feature. One will be a 0.3 MP camera on the middle inside [where the old mc used to be] and the other will be at the bottom right hand corner of the top screen. The DSi camera comes with 11 embedded lenses which allows you to play around with your pictures while you take them with "fun" aspects like changing color balances, adding fun frames, etc.
The DSi will also come with embedded photo editing software like on some Sony cameras currently so you can basically open up paint and do random shit with the pictures you take. Fun right? Slide show software and keeping pictures in order of date taken are other little things that nintendo made sure to offer. As you can see in the pictures, there will also be a SD slot [unsure of SDHC compatability at the moment] for you to store all those lovely pictures you take.

It can also be a tool for college students and young-adults to have more fun at parties. For middle-aged and senior citizens, it may become a photo diary to keep pictures of their grandchildren and hobbies.
With the added function of the sd memory card, its obvious that nintendo would finally put in a music player. With the success of Moonshell from the dslite series and the sony PSP's native music abilities, it would almost be nintendo's stupidest move if they didnt put music functionality in this version of the ds.
 
Some key points:
-Music will be in .AAC format so grab those convertors =P
-As usual the music player is primitiave with no options for album art scrolling like an ipod at the moment
-Living up to its interactive name, you can modify the music on the go, controlling things like pitch and speed
-Kids can now listen to their favorite hanna montana songs with a chipmunk voice lol
Got dammit nintendo FINALLY you give us a working opera browser without needing that stupid ram expansion. Currrently like with the wii, the nintendo DSi Opera browser will be the first software available to the DSi free of charge [obtainable though download stations which i will talk about later] I would assume that this is saved into the SD card but if it gets corrupted i wonder how nintendo will go about working with encryption and backup processes for the DSi. With the wii you didnt mess around with your SD card much. but with music functionality you'll be transferring stuff all the time which allows an idiot to corrupt his/her? sd card.
Again, nintendo can be bitches and start charging for the DSi browser like they do now with the Wii opera browser, lets just hope this is after it is released in North America. The opera browser is specially tuned and made for the DS due to a joint project by Nintendo and Opera. So nintendo claims that it is possible that you may see faster load times using the DSi because this is a browser made just for it. i duno it sounds like a marketing scam lol.
 
 
since the new ds will make use of the nintendo shopping channel, all wii points cards are being converted into general Nintendo Points Cards so that they can be either used for wii or ds purchases. If you plan on getting a new ds as soon as it comes out, might be in your best interests to grab a wii points card now while they go on sale since they're being discontinued.
Defaulted with the nintendo DSi is the opera browser and nintendo notepad. a simple device to jot down notes and save them to the memory... kidna like a PDA function i guess. All DSi's apparently come with a very "Lite/small" version of Brain Age attached just because the japanese loved training their brains with the last 2 games. Other nintendo packages will be available as well in a "Windows XP, Home, and PRO" style. There will be different packages available form anyone who wants to make their ds a full PDAish thing to kids who just want to get the internet only.
Again an issue at hand is where will all these apps be stored and what happens in the event of a corruption or u want to move all your save data. With the old ds you could move your previous FC and stuff using the wifi between the old ds and the new one [asusming the old one even works XD] but nintendo better implement some backup options for data.
 
 
nintendo really wants to get its shopping channel off the ground. I assume that alot of shovelware is going to be available on the nintendo shop channel but i guess nintendo also wants to expand its wifi hotspots... with this assuming that nintendo doesnt trust the current wifi abilities if the DSi alone on normal wifi spots that the iphone and psp currently use. Nevertheless its kinda funny to see that mcdonalds japan has signed on to have ds download stations in its stores, maybe they'll get charging stations too XD
TMAN's FINAL VERDICT.
with the help of Kotaku, ive been able to gather some summary specs of the new DSi versus our beloved R4-able DSlite. At first glance you can see some differences between the two devices:
- there are 3 lights and they have been moved onto the left side: wifi, charge, and ON [blue wtf?]
- speakers look smaller but apparently will pack a more powerful punch
- for the most part both are the same in size, except the new one is a bit thinner and a few mm longer
- one big difference is that the DSi is no longer shiny. It will use rough plastic in colors of white and black for now
- the overall package is a bit more square than the lite

This is pretty steep for a camera we will never use, hannah montana chipmunk-able tunes, and the lack of a gba port. Nintendo kinda shot itself in the foot for future guitar hero games since the gba port is gone and is also killing off its nerd gamers and old school fanboys like Jade from playing pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald anymore lol. The internet browser thing is nice to hear but the chance that mcdonalds in North America will setup download stations is pretty unlikely to me.
With the SD slot i can only hope nintendo is smart and makes it SDHC compatible. Otherwise they're killing themselves again. With the chinese though it wont be long before somebody reverse engineers the sd card slot so that the firmware can be hacked more easily and the R4 will live once again. In the meantime, keep your nintendo ds lites with you, and keep an eye out for stupid people willing to sell their ds lites for cheap in order to get the new one >_> craigslist ftw lol.
Finally with no word of good games coming out... except jade's ever so favourite POKEMAN PLATINUM.. >_> and with no word with any graphics improvements, there seems to be no reason to get a new DSi. The problem is that if u wanna up the graphics on games for the DSi, you either have to release dual versions for DSL and DSi or just stick to putting the DSL on overdrive and hope that the screen doesn't blow up on you just so that the DSi can have slightly better graphics than its predecessor. With the increased wifi ability, this would mean that nintendo would have to re-release some of its staple titles such as Pokemons and Mario Karts jsut so that people can be more satisifed while playing online.

Ok so tons of programmers have tried and failed. maybe this guy will give us hope.
Alright well some novice programmer by the name of Daren has decided to make a ds port for the popular dance game Stepmania. Coincidentally he is french too lol, just like the sc port developers... weird. i guess french people like programming ds games haha. Well hes uhh yeah some 21 year old programmer from Loire Valley so hopefully his novice knowledge in Java, c and c++ (lol mr wong) will yield good results.

Homebrew developer Daren just announced that they've released StepmaniaDS v0.00, a homebrewed version of stepmania for the Nintendo DS. Details on the engine itself are sketchy, since the release so far only has random arrows scrolling up (with no music) and a debug mode to try to get the software to know when you've synced your keystrokes with the moves on-screen.
StepmaniaDS is an early coded build, with no playable release yet. Though the current version looks very pretty with its graphics and such, we dont know if this project will ultimately be successful and if you can load on your favourite stepmania tracks onto it. The developer currently hopes to get a dancepad on the touchscreen with stylus recognition for the beta release. Currently the controls are like so:
Left arrow L
Down on D-pad
Up on D-pad
Right arrow R
OR
Y button for left
B button for right
X button for up
A button for down

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Overall it looks like this is going to be a very nice little piece of homebrew that asians will keep in their ds's for a while. I guess single player will have to be achieved first before even stepping foot in the multiplayer aspect. If the arrow recognition programming is mastered and the ability to port the stepmania music files onto the ds, then this will really take off. Its been a while since the ds had any decent homebrew games. Wifi coop would be insane.

Alright so i guess we all saw it coming... nobody can make a starcraft ds homebrew game and hope that blizzard doesnt notice XD They probably downloaded the beta versions to see how good it was looked hahaha. The Cease and Desist letter to these programmers after they recently updated to version 0.03 with multiplayer support.
The developers have posted on their site today saying this:
"For legal reasons, we must abandon this project."
They have now ripped down all traces of their unofficial DS port of Starcraft and i guess we had our hopes up for a while that maybe this homebrew could be successful or raise a flag to blizzard to start porting games to the ds already =P As a sidenote, since they got C&Ded does this mean that its illegal to be hosting these homebrew nds files now?

We all dreamed and talked about it... now its finally coming true n_n
Homebrew developers The StarDev just announced that they've released StarLite v0.01, a homebrewed version of Starcraft for the Nintendo DS. Details on the engine itself are sketchy, but indications from the developer's notes leads us to believe it is not simply a port of Blizzard's Starcraft to the Nintendo DS. In fact, StarLite appears to be a complete homebrew recreation of the game for Nintendo's dual-screen handheld.
StarLite version 0.01 is an early coded build, but it is the first playable release from The StarDev. Though the current version suffers from many bugs and hitches, the animations and implemented real-time strategy game mechanics stay completely loyal to the original.
However, StarLite has a long development road ahead of it, and The StarDev have announced that they are willing to hire two to three more developers into the team to speed up the process. They've also lined up goals for the next release, which include pathfinding and collision management, WiFi ad-hoc multiplayer for 2 player matches, and more buildings and units. The game is also playable over DS emulators, but the authors suggest you use NO$GBA - the only PC-based DS emulator known to the developers that plays StarLite's sounds correctly.

CURRENTLY v0.01:
- Use the touch screen to select units or draw squares to select groups.
- The location finding is pretty bad for scv building.
- Tap on an scv, a building, and a point on the map to build (no building ghosting yet).
- You can only make one marine at a time.
- Map boundaries have NOT been set. you can walk on space lol.
- SCV's can mine minerals and PSI/food also increases but isnt enforced.
- GLITCHES OFTEN! its a beta release sheesh get over it -_-

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I guess single player will have to be achieved first before even stepping foot in the multiplayer aspect. Personally i would have preferred for the basics to be figured out and then StarcraftDS to be full of UMS games. Single player seems way too tedious and programming all the units, their AI, sprite interaction, etc will probably cause this piece of homebrew to stop in its tracks.. not to mention the possibility that Blizzard might C&D them. Oh well, this little demo kept me intrigued for a bit, lets see how it does for you. |
